POST-EVENT FIELD TRIP
ANABRANCHING FLUVIAL SYSTEM OF THE ARAGUAIA RIVER (CENTRAL BRAZIL)
Leaders: Prof. Dr Maximiliano Bayer (UFG-CIAMB), Prof. Dr André Salgado (UFG-CIAMB), Prof. Dr José C. Stevaux (UFMS-UEM), Prof. Dr Edgardo M. Latrubesse (UFG-CIAMB)
Participants in this fieldtrip will have the opportunity to explore the anabranching fluvial system of the Araguaia River, one of the most dynamic large rivers in Brazil and the largest free-flowing river in Central Brazil without hydroelectric regulation. The Araguaia River is characterised by an anabranching pattern with a tendency toward braided conditions and high sandy sediment load, offering exceptional exposures of sedimentary structures and fluvial geomorphology.
The fieldtrip will focus on the morphosedimentary dynamics of this system and its response to environmental changes, particularly the impacts of large-scale deforestation in the Cerrado biome. This region has experienced some of the highest deforestation rates in the world and has become a major center of agribusiness, significantly influencing sediment supply and fluvial processes. As a result, the Araguaia River represents a great example of rapid fluvial changes in response to anthropogenic forcing.
Participants will examine a wide range of sedimentary features and geomorphological elements, including sandy bars, islands, and channel patterns within a broad alluvial plain extending several kilometers in width. The abundance of sandy sediments provides outstanding conditions for observing sedimentary structures and facies relationships. The fieldtrip will emphasise discussion and interpretation of these features, as well as their broader implications for fluvial sedimentology and environmental change.
Field activities will include boat-based excursions along the river near the town of Aruanã, allowing close observation of sedimentary processes and landforms. Additional stops include the historic town of Goiás Velho, where flood risks and fluvial interactions with urban environments will be discussed.
Logistics/recommendations:
The fieldtrip will start in Goiânia, with participants responsible for arranging their own travel to this city. There are frequent flights connecting São Paulo to Goiânia. From Goiânia, transportation to the Araguaia River will be by bus, on fully paved roads.
Fieldwork in Aruanã will include one or two days of activities along the Araguaia River, primarily conducted by boat. July represents the optimal time for this excursion, as river levels are low, allowing excellent exposure of sedimentary structures and geomorphological features. Weather conditions are expected to be warm; participants are advised to bring sunscreen, hats, and appropriate field clothing. Opportunities for swimming in the river may be available.
Some walking in sandy and uneven terrain is expected; appropriate footwear is recommended.
